`Hairspray` star Elijah Kelley set to help college students `Raise Their Voice`

Released on: October 13, 2008, 3:37 pm

Press Release Author: California State University, Long Beach

Industry: Entertainment

Press Release Summary: ASI spreads the word, "Raise your voice," to
CSULB students

Press Release Body: Long Beach, CA - Associated Students, Inc. is hosting the Raise
Your Voice
event Oct. 15 from 11:30 to 2 p.m. on the University Student Union's
Southwest Terrace.
"Beyond registering new voters, we think it's important to raise student
awareness of this historic election," said Andrew Kress, AS secretary of
system-side affairs. "If we want to leave our mark this time around, we need
to know the issues and act on them. By registering students, hosting debates
and inviting open discussion, we hope to create a more politically charged
atmosphere on campus."
There will be free Declare Yourself campaign T-shirts from American Eagle
for students who register at the event. Elijah Kelley from the movie
"Hairspray" will be present to help students register and photo opportunities.
Representatives from the local campaigns of Sens. Barack Obama and John
McCain will be speaking as well as representatives from Propositions 4, 7
and 8. Throughout the event DJ Zemo and the CSULB Breakers will be
entertaining attendees.
"We are happy to be hosting local representation from both the Obama and
McCain campaigns as well as speakers on the 'yay' and 'nay' positions for
many of the propositions on the ballot," said Kress. "Students will be able to
learn more about the issues on the ballot this November. We're very excited
about this event, and we hope students will be able to take advantage of it."
Apple will be present with equipment to help students register to vote online
before the Oct. 20 deadline.
