Heritage Health Helps Patients Experiencing Pain in the Butt

Released on: September 2, 2008, 11:44 am

Press Release Author: Heritage Health

Industry: Healthcare

Press Release Summary: Patients misdiagnose themselves with sciatica, in fact have
piriformis syndrome.

Press Release Body: Centennial, CO — People often injure themselves when they least
expect it, while golfing, cleaning out the garage, or raking leaves over the
weekend. Patients rush to their chiropractor or physical therapist seeking emergency
treatment for severe “pain in the buttocks”.

Dr. Timothy Nelson, a chiropractor at Heritage Health in Centennial Colorado, says
that many patients misdiagnose themselves with sciatica, when what they actually
have is a pulled muscle in their buttocks area. Called piriformis syndrome, pain
from this pulled butt muscle can come on suddenly and be extremely painful. The
sciatic nerve actually runs through the piriformis muscle and if the muscle becomes
tight, often from overuse, it can put pressure on the sciatic nerve and cause pain.

Dr. Nelson tells us that, “Piriformis syndrome is a common muscle injury that
results from repetitive motion and over use of the piriformis muscle. Pain is
usually felt in the buttocks first, and many patients experience referred pain to
the legs.”

The fastest and safest treatment for piriformis syndrome is to seek chiropractic
treatment for the misaligned hip and a physical therapist/massage therapist for
trigger point therapy and light stretching, says Dr. Nelson.

Dr. Nelson tells us that, “The best way to prevent piriformis syndrome is through
regular stretching and strengthening. Stretch before you do any repetitive activity
such as playing tennis or doing extra chores around the house such as cleaning out
the garage.”
