A New Advance in Tissue Engineering

Released on = October 13, 2006, 7:46 am

Press Release Author = Kristy Urie

Industry = Pharmaceuticals

Press Release Summary = A New Advance in Tissue Engineering

Press Release Body = Derm123vip is releasing its first skincare product based on tissue engineering. The tissue engineering discovery was made during work at Massachusetts General Hospital/ Harvard Medical School during the mid 1990's. Tissue engineering is a new field in medicine that is based on growing new tissue using polymers or using elements such as growth factors to recruit cell elements to an area so that new tissue growth can occur. Dr.
Casanova was the first researcher to show that old cartilage had the potential to regenerate when placed on a polymer for which he won the prestigious Northeastern Plastic Surgery Award.

The process of tissue engineering new growth is a significantly different approach than what is now the current paradigm for rejuvenation of aging skin. The current methods involves some sort of abrasion to the epidermal layer, or damage to the dermis of the skin in order to stimulate new tissue. The sequela of this process is that
of harsh redness and is quite painful for some patients. Tissue engineering techniques employ a migration of growth factors transdermally which penetrates through the pores. The growth factors then recruit fibroblast to the area which is the foundation for the production of new collagen, filling in areas that are losing collagen supports leading to extensive wrinkling.

This is the first time a skincare product has utilized the principles of tissue engineering. This new product is called Derm123 Replenishing Complex.
